Music Hashtags

Are you still making a name for yourself as a music artist on TikTok? Or are you already fairly popular and have a new song to launch? The hashtags you use in your music video will help carry your posts far and wide.

As with all kinds of TikTok content, mixing and matching the right hashtags is key to finding the right audience for your posts. Here’s a basic hashtag formula that always works:

  1. Use generic or popular hashtags within your industry. For musicians, popular choices include #music, #song, #original, #dance, #trendingsound, and #[music genre/category] (such as #pop or #country).
  2. Add a niche hashtag, branded hashtag, album/song name hashtag. Examples are #chill, #relaxing, #cover, #guitar, #piano, #[album/song name], etc.

Take note that if you’re sharing an original sound, you should label your content as such. To do this, tap the Add sound button at the top while editing your video. Then tap the Original Sound button at the bottom.

If you’re doing a cover, remember to mention this via a hashtag and in your video description; always credit the original work. You shouldn’t worry about copyright issues if you’re not using your cover for commercial purposes (such as selling it).

How To Find New Music Hashtags

Do you want to promote your original music on TikTok? Your goal should be to land on the app’s Explore page (via the web app) or the @MusicOnTikTok page. But first, make sure to get an Artist Account on TikTok

According to TikTok’s 2023 announcement, the Artist Account offers features and promotional tools to help artists and fans connect. It’s available to all artists/musicians that have released music.

With an Artist Account, you’ll have an Artist tag and music tab on your TikTok profile. You can also use the New Release and By Artist tags to help promote your music on the app’s Discovery page.

The next step is to figure out relevant hashtags for music artists to use with your new music. Keep in mind the basic formula we mentioned above. You can also use a hashtag generator to help you identify trending hashtags relevant to your music content.

Good Hashtags for Musicians

What are the best hashtags to help you make a name for yourself as a music artist on TikTok? Choose hashtags that authentically represent your sound, and then match these with a few generic ones.

Here are examples of generic music hashtags for TikTok:

  • #livemusic
  • #music
  • #singer, #artist, #musician, #songwriter
  • #originalsound
  • #nowplaying
  • #rapper, #hiphop, #alternative, and other genre-specific hashtags
  • #trendingsongs, #viralsound
  • #TikTokmusic

Here’s how to create targeted hashtags to help listeners discover/identify your sound:

  • Describe your sound: #chillvibes, #lovesong, #heartbreak, #motivational, #upbeat, #feelgood, #summervibes
  • Turn your song title into a hashtag.
  • Do a hashtag search on TikTok using the targeted hashtags you like to see how popular they are. Look for exact match hashtags and other variations of your preferred keyword.

Music Video Hashtags

What is a good hashtag for musicians with an original music video? Aside from the options listed above, other generic options include:

  • #lyricvideo
  • #originalmusicvideo
  • #singersoftiktok
  • #artistsontiktok

Again, add hashtags that best fit your video’s mood and style. Targeted hashtags help the algorithm identify viewers who are most likely to enjoy your sound more accurately.

Check out other artists in your niche and see what tags they’re using. Pay close attention to videos with the highest number of views. If the tag fits, use it.

What Are Good Hashtag Musician Ideas? Frequently Asked Questions

How do you find the right combination of hashtags for your music? Here are a few more FAQs to help you develop an effective hashtag strategy.

What hashtags should artists use?

Use popular keywords and phrases in the music industry that target a wide audience. Try the options listed above; pick two or three you like. Then, add a few more hashtags that are more specific and that best describe your sound.

How many hashtags should you use in a post?

Less is always more when it comes to hashtags. TikTok has a 4,000-character limit for video descriptions, including hashtags. Even if you don’t have a long description, too many hashtags will make your post look cluttered and all over the place.

Use no more than ten, but the best number, according to reports, is between three and five hashtags.
