AI tools are everywhere, especially when you’re creating digital content. From auto-fill options to predictive text and image enhancements, AI technologies are now ubiquitous in our digital lives. If you’re on TikTok, the coolest editing tools use AI tech. The platform recently released guidelines on using TikTok AIGC (AI-generated content).

Here’s everything you need to know about TikTok’s policies on artificial intelligence.

TikTok’s New Requirement: Label AI Generated Content

TikTok encourages the use of AI to explore incredible creative opportunities. The platform also wants to inform viewers when creators use AI to alter or modify their content significantly.

Last September 2023, TikTok launched a new tool to label AI-generated content and promote transparent and responsible content creation practices.

The AI-generated content label is available during the content creation process or, more specifically, on the Post page. TikTok encourages creators to apply the label to any content they have completely generated or significantly altered with AI in compliance with Community Guidelines

This includes content digitally edited to show realistic-appearing scenes or people. The label is also consistent with TikTok’s synthetic media policy, which:

“[…] requires people to label AI-generated content that contains realistic images, audio or video, in order to help viewers contextualize the video and prevent the potential spread of misleading content.”

TikTok’s synthetic media policy also specifies certain content exceptions to mitigate the potential harm of using AI to manipulate perceptions. TikTok prohibits the following types of content, with or without the AIGC label:

  • AI-generated images showing fake authoritative sources or crisis events.
  • Content falsely depicting public figures in certain contexts, such as being bullied, making an endorsement, or being endorsed.
  • Content using the likeness of young people or the likeness of adult private figures without their permission.

In addition to the new label, content creators can use other AI content disclosures, like captions, stickers, or watermarks.

TikTok’s Latest Update on AI Transparency

Early in May 2024, TikTok announced that it is starting to “automatically label AI-generated content […] uploaded from certain other platforms.”

This is part of TikTok’s continued efforts to promote AI transparency and safe and responsible creative expression through AIGC.

Here’s a summary of TikTok’s latest AIGC labeling updates:

  • TikTok is renaming TikTok AI effects and including “AI” in the effects name and effects label.
  • The platform has updated its guidelines for Effect House’s community of creators.
  • TikTok is automatically labeling AIGC made with TikTok AI effects. The platform has also required creators to use the AIGC TikTok label on realistic AIGC for over a year.
  • TikTok is implementing the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity’s (C2PA) Content Credentials technology for auto-labeling of AIGC created on other platforms. The technology attaches metadata to content (images and videos) to help TikTok recognize and label AIGC instantly. Soon, it will also be available for audio-only content as well.
  • TikTok will be attaching Content Credentials to all TikTok content, including downloaded content. This will enable everyone to use C2PA’s verify tool to identify AIGC made on TikTok.
  • TikTok is joining the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) to help drive wider adoption of Content Credentials in the industry.
  • Working alongside MediaWise and WITNESS, TikTok will be launching a media literacy campaign throughout the year. TikTok will be releasing 12 videos to contextualize what AIGC labels mean and minimize confusion among viewers.
  • TikTok is continuing to adapt to evolving AI technologies to combat the deceptive and harmful use of AIGC, particularly in elections.

Using TikTok AIGC To Build an Authentic Community

TikTok puts very few limits on creative expression on the platform. You can be your authentic self and push the limits of your imagination. The platform offers a safe, diverse, and inclusive space for all voices; anybody can find a community where they’ll feel welcome and appreciated.

TikTok also allows its vast community of creators to stay authentic while leveraging the power of AI editing tools. Creating or editing content with AI can unlock more opportunities for community building and engagement.

TikTok AIGC tools offer tons of amazing creative possibilities. Just make sure to comply with the platform’s AIGC labeling guidelines.
